The Thank You Edition

Folks,

Thank You.

Thank you for all of your hard work on the Silver Line Millage Campaign. In spite of our efforts, we did not win.

Please note the word choice.

We did not win the Silver Line Millage. I do not feel in any way that we lost this election. This is not “spin.” This is not minimizing the fact that the YES votes totaled 47.7% and the No votes were at 52.3%.

Actually, this phrase puts proper light on the fact that a HUGE THANK YOU needs to go out to our record number of volunteers and endorsers and supporters. Unfortunately, voters looked into the eyes of the worst Michigan economy since the Great Depression and, collectively, we blinked.

So, I say THANK YOU to all who helped in any way. Feel good about how well we did. Some might even think 47.7% yes in this economy is quite a feet. (Let’s hope the feds do!)

Also, stay tuned. This speed bump will definitely slow us down some, but there are a few transit issues on the horizon at the county, state and federal levels. (We’ll save the details until next week.)

The Tipping the Balance Edition

Folks,

We’re now about twenty hours from the polls opening.

Last chance to send out the word–VOTE YES on the Silver Line Millage!

Please call, e-mail or visit your neighbors! The election will be put in the balance tomorrow and we need your help to weigh down the Silver Line side of the scales!

Speaking of balance, there was a balanced article in the Grand Rapids Press on Sunday about the election. However, their balance focused on the pros and cons of the Silver Line. They failed to mention that the Friends of Transit website lists over 400 hundred endorsing organizations and individuals compared to the one person’s name (yes, there’s only one person listed) on the so-called “opponent’s” website.

We know there are hundreds of people who have said they will support the Silver Line. We know that tens of thousands have received mailings and phone calls and e-mails educating them and encouraging a YES VOTE.

But we need your help in these final hours to do all you can to tip the balance in favor of the Silver Line! All of these efforts are for naught if we do not get the YES VOTE out tomorrow.

Of course, remember to vote tomorrow if you live in East Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids, Grandville, Kentwood, Walker or Wyoming!

The Final Four Edition

Folks,

No basketball hoop-la happening here–we are simply down to our final four days until the Silver Line election. Some might even call it May Madness!

So, suit up and get in to the action!

Friday’s task–did you send that e-mail yet to your family, friends and neighbors to ask them to VOTE YES on May 5th for the Silver Line? No better time than the present!

Saturday’s task–how about walking through a neighborhood and dropping off some literature to get folks to the polls voting YES for the Silver Line? Details are at the Friends of Transit website. We’re meeting at the Kent Ionia Labor Council Hall, 918 Benjamin NE (off of Fuller Ave) at 9:30 a.m. that morning. If you can’t walk with us, how about a stroll up and down your own street encouraging the YES vote for the Silver Line? The weather should be fine.

Sunday’s task–the blogosphere is calling. Seems that the few opponents to the Silver Line are jamming the message boards on the local media outlets. This Sunday, the GR Press will be running an article on the Silver Line and we need you to log in to www.mlive.com, find the article on the millage campaign and then post a message in favor of the Silver Line.

Monday’s task–this one’s easy. Just call a couple dozen of your family or friends to remind them to VOTE YES for the Silver Line!

Of course, Tuesday is saved for voting and then the celebration that evening of some very hard work.

The Silver Line Express Special Edition

One week to election day.

Have you e-mailed your family, friends and neighbors to ask them to VOTE YES on May 5th for the Silver Line?

This special edition of GTT Weekly is focussed only on this critical need–the Silver Line’s future needs you to send a very brief, “express” message to every one you know via any and all means available.

The express message:

Vote YES on May 5th for the Silver Line.

If you want to send along additional information, how about a link to the Silver Line commercial which shows the animated Silver Line in action.

Or, you could send along a link to the video of bus rapid transit in action in Cleveland.

At the risk of overloading your e-mail, there is always tons of info at the Silver Line website or the fact-packed Friends of Transit website.

The Walk, Talk & Type Edition (or The Calling All Volunteers Edition!)

Crunch time is upon us! The Silver Line Millage election is now only twelve days away! And we need your help!

The Silver Line has been getting some great press and the list of endorsers continues to grow.

If you didn’t see the recent news coverage, you’ll want to check out the piece on WZZM TV 13 that aired last Saturday — an excellent overview of the millage issue and then comments of volunteers in action. Also, the Grand Rapids Press has an article in today’s edition concerning the Rapid/ITP Board’s commitment to working with the community on the further refinements on the Silver Line.

Speaking of the Press and endorsements, did you see their endorsement of the Silver Line in last Saturday’s Press? A great overview of the reasons to VOTE YES!

These are good things for the Silver Line campaign. But campaigns are not won or lost through excellent media coverage and strong endorsements. These things surely help. But the campaign will be won or lost in the voting booth and we need your help to talk to as many voters as we can in the next twelve days.

Twelve days!?!

Yes, crunch time is upon us and the first task at hand is to get people out the next two Saturdays to canvass our neighborhoods. This job is what is known in the campaign world as a “lit drop.” That is to say, we’ll give you a list of likely voters and you simply need to drop off a piece of campaign literature at their front doors. No need to knock on the door and engage the occupant.

Again, these will be on the two Saturdays before the election: April 25 and May 2. We’ll leave from the Kent Ionia Labor Council hall at 918 Benjamin NE off Fuller Ave at 9:30am and then we’ll walk until noon. Contact our campaign coordinator, Ruth Kelly via e-mail or call her at (616) 447-1682 to get signed up.

If walking isn’t your thing, how about talking? Groups of volunteers will be making phone calls next week and on election eve in the evening. The dates are:

• Monday, April 27
• Tuesday, April 28
• Thursday, April 30
• Monday, May 4

What could be more fun than calling your family, friends or total strangers urging them to vote YES for the Silver Line? (I can think of a few things, but that’s not the point.) We need to make these calls and turn out the YES vote. We’ll provide the phone list and the script (and refreshments). Contact Ruth Kelly to sign up for this volunteer role.

And while you’re preparing to make your calls, if you want to get more familiar with the Silver Line, head to its website or never hesitate to check out the fact-packed Friends of Transit website.

If walking or talking doesn’t strike your fancy, how about utilizing the power of the pen, err, keyboard? There are very few easier ways to spread the news about this great opportunity to build our community’s and west Michigan’s prosperity. To name only two such ways to use your typing and mouse skills, you could head to the Friends of Transit website and click on a piece of literature and then forward it to every one you know living in the six cities. You could also write a letter to the Editor of the Grand Rapids Press and thank them for their endorsement of the Silver Line Millage. (Reminder — 200 words get sent to pulse@grpress.com.) I’ll leave other typing options to your creativity!

So, I hope you’ll take a moment to walk, talk and type for the Silver Line. In reaching out to voters, it will make all the difference!

The As If You Needed Another Reason Edition

Folks,

You’ve got to love Lou Glazer.

The news he brings can seem pretty bleak, but you can’t blame the messenger, can you? Is it his fault that too many of Michigan’s citizens just want to live in the 20th century in spite of the fact that the 21st century is almost ten years old?

While the facts and figures may not be the best, Lou and his crew at Michigan Future, Inc. has a set of recommendations to move Michigan back in the direction of prosperity. This week, they released their latest report, “Michigan’s Transition to a Knowledge-Based Economy: Second Annual Progress Report”. When asked on Wednesday what the two most important things he would do, he stated: (1) increase funding for higher education and (2) invest in transit.

Yup, invest in transit. (See why I like him?)

So, how can you not vote YES on the Silver Line Millage on May 5th? If you needed another reason to vote YES for the Silver Line, check out Lou’s report! If you need a refresher on the Silver Line Millage, head to the Friends of Transit website.

This week, we’ve uploaded all of the campaign literature for your use. Check it out to see how the Silver Line is one route to a more prosperous Michigan.

When many folks read Lou’s report, they see the doom and gloom. The headline in Tuesday’s Grand Rapids Press wasn’t pretty.

How can we not be sobered up by the front page banner: “Michigan income ranking falls 11 percent below national average; weakest since 1929”? Though at the end of the article about Lou’s report, we get to the silver lining or at least our opportunity for a silver lining: “”Quite simply, in a flattening world where work can increasingly be done anyplace by anybody, the places with the greatest concentrations of talent win,” according to the Michigan Future study.”

That’s where the the Silver Line comes in–it’s all about supporting great places all along its route.

The Center for Michigan’s take on the report puts a better focus on our opportunity for a silver lining:
“And Lou repeated his planks of what’s needed to return Michigan to prosperity, including expanded investments of quality of place, increasing public investments in higher education, and “transforming teaching and learning so that it is aligned with the realities of a flattening world — all of education needs reinvention.””

Investments of quality of place. That’s got the Silver Line written all over it!

The Virtual Virus Edition

Folks,

We are now under four weeks to the Silver Line Millage election on May 5th and it’s time to catch a cold.

I’ve heard tell that we’re all connected to each other by six degrees of separation or less. Some have said that we’re even closer via the Internet. With Facebook and Twitter and all the other such new-fangled things, we’ve got to be only two or three mouse clicks away from each other.

So what are you waiting for? How about helping to start a virtual virus?

I can see it now. Every Inbox in Kent County catching the Silver Line fever within a day or two?

It’s easy. No coughing or sneezing required. Just point and click and you’re passing on the germ that will lead to the next generation of public transportation service in our community brought to us by The Rapid/ITP–the Silver Line.

So, pass it on!

And if you really want to hang out with other infected folks, try on some Friends of Transit volunteer work. The next three Saturdays (starting on April 18th) will be filled with “lit drops” throughout our area. In between times, many of us will be making a few phone calls to likely voters.

Finally, if you really want to infect the community, why not write a letter to the Editor of the Grand Rapids Press? It’s easy–just send an e-mail of 200 words or less to pulse@grpress.com and the virus will spread far and wide.

Can’t beat the old fashioned viral infection going on.

So, pass on the Silver Line virus to your family, friends and neighbors! May 5th is fast approaching and we need our entire community to have the Silver Line fever by then!

The Calling All Volunteers Edition

Folks,

We are 32 days from the Silver Line Millage election day. Believe it or not, people have begun voting this week as absentee ballots began going out from city clerks in the six cities. Friends of Transit has been equally as busy sending information to these voters in order to garner a “YES” vote for the Silver Line – a Rapid Transit Service of The Rapid/ITP.

It now time to step up our efforts in the public square and at people’s doorsteps in order to get all of us to vote “YES” on May 5 for the Silver Line.

As for action in the public square, there are many ways you can help!

First, have stated your support for the Silver Line out on the World Wide Web? It’s not too late to place your moniker on the list of hundreds of persons and organizations who have already endorsed the Silver Line. Head to the Silver Line endorsement form to get signed up today!

Next, how about seeing your name in favor of the Silver Line in print? Please consider a letter to the editor to your favorite local newspaper. For the Grand Rapids Press, simply send an e-mail to pulse@grpress.com — limit your submission to 200 words and include your name, address and daytime phone number. Then look each day to see if your name is in the Press.

Finally, how about a sign for your front yard? As the public walks and drives by, you’ll want to show off your support!

Others are looking at the campaign–Article on the Kick Off Celebration in the March 31st Advance/Cadence.

As for one-on-one action, Friends of Transit has many options for you as well.

The best (and most fun) is sending information on to your family and friends. Head to the Friends of Transit website in order to learn how you can get connected via Facebook to let your “friends” know about the Silver Line. You could also grab a fact or two and send them along in an e-mail to people you know. Finally, in the next week, we’ll have electronic versions of all our campaign materials for you to forward to every one you know in the six cities. (Just think of all the trees you’ll save!)

How about volunteering to make some phone calls later in April? As election day nears, we’ll want to contact as many voters as we can in order to get out the vote.

Next, many of us will be heading out to the many doorsteps of our community the two Saturdays before the election, April 25th and May 2nd. We’ll be gathering at about 9:30am those days for a good ol’ fashioned lit drop to pass out another piece of literature on the benefits of the Silver Line. You won’t want to miss these spring walks!

And, of course, you need to VOTE YES on May 5th.

The Moving Pictures Edition

Folks,

Moving pictures transformed the entertainment landscape of the 20th century. Now they are working their magic on the 21st. Not so much from the perspective of the big Hollywood blockbuster–that’s so 1950’s with just better special effects.

I’m talking the digital frontier where story tellers are plying their trade not on the silver screen but on your 17″ monitor.

And the story tellers are busy on behalf of the Silver Line and public transportation. The first set of moving pictures gets us ready for the feature–an animated piece which is about our very own Silver Line! Check out the new graphic representation of the the Silver Line in action.

The next moving picture comes from the roving vlogger Andy Dragt. He was sent on a special assignment from Friends of Transit to check out the HealthLine in Cleveland, Ohio. As he notes, Cleveland’s system is the closest bus rapid transit (BRT) system to us. His pictures show in more detail some of the features of a BRT system, such as paying your fare at the station–not on the vehicle, a raised platform and a station–not a “bus stop.” Check out Andy on the BRT!

For the true movie die hards who want to watch a few more moving pictures on BRT, head to California or overseas. See why BRT is an “affordable, adaptable and cost-effective alternative.”

So, if you like what you’re seeing, endorse the Silver Line Millage today!

Then plan on some popcorn and other refreshments as you volunteer to help on the campaign.
